My Ride, My Way

Have you discovered a passion for cycling over lockdown? Did you know that Portsmouth City has reported a 125% increase in cycling since lockdown and some roads seeing a 60% drop in car usage? As a result this has reduced air pollution by up to 41%.

Rowans Ride, My Ride, My Way is a fun way to get out on your bike and explore your local surroundings, whilst being kind to the environment and raising funds to support local Hospice care.

It’s FREE to sign up; just choose a distance to challenge yourself. Why not take the family on a leisurely bike ride? How about competing against friends or colleagues to see who can complete an epic route the fastest or raise the most amount of sponsorship?

Rowans Ride is open to anyone and everyone – find out more below…

Choose your route

Spend time this summer exploring the lovely open countryside, beautiful seafronts, country parks, woodlands and open spaces. Pump up your tyres, pack a picnic and pedal your way to achieving the challenge you want to. You can complete the distance over any period of time, it doesn’t have to be in one go. If getting out and about is tricky for you, why not take on a route using an exercise bike?

Route:           Choose any route or ride the traditional Rowans Ride Routes.

Distance:    Choose any distance, why not see how many miles you can accumulate?

We are asking our Rowans’ Riders to pledge to raise £250 in sponsorship money to help support Rowans Hospice Charity in its long road to recovery after the devastating financial losses caused by the pandemic.

All riders who raise £250 will receive a shiny medal as a thank you…

Prize for the most miles

We are delighted to confirm that Portsmouth Cycle Exchange, have kindly donated 1 brand new Bottecchia Verde Natura bike to the person/group who cycles the most miles. They decided to support us, as the charity is very close to their heart, as Jack, one of the founders of the business and family member was cared for at Rowans Hospice. The family were happy and impressed with the level of care Jack received.

We are also giving  a Rowans Cycle Jersey to our top fundraiser.

The easiest way to collect sponsorship is by setting up a JustGiving fundraising page. It is quick to do, easy to share your story, and simple to receive donations. Any money raised on your fundraising page will be automatically sent to us on a weekly basis, so you do not have to worry about collecting money or sponsorship forms.

Visit our special Rowans Ride JustGiving Campaign to set up your online fundraising page here.

If you would like to raise money offline, you can download a sponsorship form here.

Top Tips for Fundraising

  • Share your page with friends and family so they can sponsor you.
  • Remind them that if they ticked yes to the Gift Aid questions on JustGiving/sponsor form, a further 25% will be added to their donation by HM Revenue & Customs.
  • Remember to thank all those who have sponsored you. If you can, mention them on social media and include a link to your fundraising page so others can also sponsor you if they wish.

Top Tip: Read the JustGiving Toolkit on setting up and promoting your fundraising page.

It is a good idea to have worked up to the distance you will be cycling so that you can complete your ‘My Ride, My Way’ comfortably. Rowans Hospice Charity supporter and Olympic Swimmer, Katy Sexton MBE has some top nutrition and exercise tips to help you get ready for your ride.

Nutrition: It is important to keep a balanced diet and include carbs, protein, fat, fibre, vitamins and minerals.

  • Eat proteins to help your body recover after your ride.
  • Eat a rainbow – the more colourful your plate can be the better.
  • Avoid fried food and sweet things (odd treats are ok).
  • Drink at least 2 litres of water a day.

Exercise: The key here is not to overdo it.

  • Build up slowly.
  • Stretch – to help you recover.
  • Rest – listen to your body.
  • STOP! If you feel unwell (and consult your GP if necessary).
  • Consult your GP if you have underlying health conditions prior to commencing any exercise.

Most importantly…have fun!

When and where is Rowans Ride, My Ride, My Way?

Rowans Ride, My Ride, My Way takes place from 14 June – 30 September 2021. Once you have registered and chosen your distance, you can cycle whatever route you like and over whatever time scale you like. Follow a route you already know, or try a new one in your local area, it is your ride, your way. We encourage you to follow a route that is well lit and to cycle with another person, if possible.

What should I wear?

The most important thing is to ensure you’re comfortable and the clothes you are wearing are suitable for the terrain you are cycling on, especially as depending on which distance you choose, you could be cycling for a few hours. It is always sensible to have layers with you that you can add or remove depending on the weather conditions. Remember to check the weather forecast before you cycle – nobody wants to be cold and wet!

Rowans Ride t-shirts are available for a suggested donation of £5.00 which you can order on registration (subject to availability).

We ask all participants of Rowans Ride to please wear a cycling helmet whilst riding.

What should I take with me?
  • Fully charged mobile phone.
  • Bottle of water.
  • Bike lights.
  • Puncture repair kit.
  • Small first aid kit.
What about toilet facilities?

You will need to check if there are any facilities on your planned route before you set out and if necessary, you may want to revise your route to make sure facilities are available. You could plot a route for your cycle which goes near your home so that you can return if needed.

How can I send you photographs or films during my cycle?

It would be great to hear from you! You can share photographs and a video/s of your cycle ride via Facebook, Twitter and Instagram using @RowansHospice. Use the hashtag #RowansHospice too. When posting to Facebook, please set your post privacy settings to public and tag @RowansHospice so we will be able to see your post and comment.

What do I get for taking part and how to I get these?
  • Adult t-shirts are available for a suggested donation of £5.00, or, if you have one from previous years, please re-use.
  • Medals will be sent to those who achieve a £250 sponsorship pledge.
  • T-shirt bib to attach to your t-shirt/clothes for you to personalise and write the name/s of those you are cycling in-memory of.  Download your t-shirt bib here.
How can I pay in any sponsorship money that I have raised?
