Thank you so much to everybody who entered.

The Finalists

Victory at Christmas

This stunning photograph of HMS Victory has us feeling very Christmassy indeed!

Assessors Comments: This is a striking night-time image composed from a seamless montage of three separate images.  All the detail we want to see is there, inviting us aboard.  A seasonal treasure, very well captured.

The Hayling Billy

What a beautiful day to explore the famous Hayling Island Billy Line.

Assessors Comments: The red of the signal aptly sets off this local coastal landscape of green and blue textures.  The photographer invites us to walk to the end of the path and enjoy the historic lines of the old and new bridges.

Worthing Pier Fireworks

Hot chocolate anybody? What a wonderful winter shot of Worthing Pier Fireworks.

Assessors Comments: A windy night but the photographer has managed to capture the pierhead fireworks at the perfect moment. The red illuminations on the pier add key interest to the night-time colour palate.  A tricky shot well accomplished.

Blue Hour at the Basin

What a peaceful and serene moment captured at Chichester Basin.

Assessors Comments: An excellent photograph of the architectural repetition of these grey-blue townhouses.  The vertical lines are perfectly maintained adding impact to the houses and their reflections.  The brighter blues and red of the dinghy and mooring buoys add an essential counterpoint to this immensely pleasing image.

Sunrise

We love how the colours of the sunrise are reflected so perfectly in the puddles.

Assessors Comments: This is a stunning sunrise image of Langstone Harbour.  The challenging lighting conditions have been handled beautifully to render all elements of the image perfectly.  In particular, the warm tones in the pub’s paintwork and the windows picking up the light, themselves re-reflected in the water, are gorgeous.

Mourning

A fantastic foggy photograph of St Hubert’s Church, Finchdean on a dewy morning.

Assessors Comments: A beautiful photograph of St Hubert’s Church in Finchdean, taken just after dawn on a (presumably) cool, misty morning.  Fine control of composition and exposure has produced an image full of mood and emotion, with all the subtly lit detail of the church and in the foreground there to enjoy.

Serene Silence

This serene photograph of the River Hamble has us dreaming of summer picnics.

Assessors Comments: Even on an overcast day a tranquil stretch of water bordered by a forested shoreline can bring a mood of calm and peacefulness, our eye is drawn across the watery expanse and reflected clouds to the distant shore.

Sun in Shaftsbury

What an incredible view! This photograph truly captures the beauty of Wiltshire.

Assessors Comments: Redolent of the South Downs, this charming pastoral landscape reminds us of country walks on fine summer days.  The wildflower verges and meadows, grassy downs, patchwork agriculture, hedgerows and tree runs are all here to enjoy.

Rays of Hope

Taken at the Southbourne Cliffs, we love how the suns’ rays are reflecting off of the water.

Assessors Comments: A successful panorama, with the sun’s rays angling down across the breadth of the image.  The horizon follows a slight sinusoidal line but the vista captures well the features of some of our peri-urban coastal hinterland.

Blue skies

We really enjoy the vivid contrast of the blue sky against the cream Tower House!

Assessors Comments: Tower House, presented almost like the bridge of a ship, from which the occupants can keep watch over the channel.  The ship atop the weathervane on the roof spire, a lively and interesting sky and the oncoming ship all add interest to this local landmark image.

Beach Huts

We love the artistic angles here capturing the colours of the beach huts in a creative way.

Assessors Comments: The low shooting angle of this beach hut scene conceals the horizon from us, adding some intrigue.  The uniformly grey and expansive sky sets off the poster paint colours of the huts, locked up for the off-season.  Bright orange bollards and lifebelt holder seems to catch the eye, as is their job.

Beside the Ferry Boat Inn

Hayling Island offers some really beautiful views and is a fantastic place to seal spot too!

Assessors Comments: Mooring cables from left and right lead the eye to the beached boat where we see the cheeky seagull on its newly painted bright blue section of hull.  The contrast with the rest of the boat, badly in need of rubbing down and repainting, is stark.

Emotional Waters

We love this black and white photograph as there is so much depth and emotion within the image.

Assessors Comments: This rendition nicely accentuates the texture of the surface of the sea, disturbed enough by the elements to ripple restlessly.  A difficult subject to take, against the light, and the result evokes the mood the two people on the pier might feel, resolutely wrapped up against the elements.

Sea and Stones

We really enjoy the rich colour of the stones, contrasting with the colourless sky; reminding us of wintery walks in our wellies.

Assessors Comments: The concrete boulders in this shoreline image draw the eye in bounds along the water’s edge.  How did they get there?  And whose are the discarded sandals in the right-hand foreground?  A bleak image with intrigue!

Jungle Cat

This photograph, shows Ragnar, “Jungle Cat” exploring after a rainy spell. What a magical photo!

Assessors Comments: A most appealing animal portrait, tastefully posed by a beautiful cat with a perfectly pink nose.  It is tempting to think she might be a police cat judging from the letters visible on her harness!  Joking aside, this is a feel-good image that makes us smile and all the more satisfying for that.
